Check out this new security gadget offered by Kwikset. It’s called SmartScan and it’s a deadbolt that provides keyless entry based on a fingerprint scanner. Up to 50 authorized users can use the system; the website even advertises “3 levels of controlled access.” The first is “Continuous Access” for the residents of the home. The second is “Temporary Access,” perfect for weekdays when your handyman will be working in the home. Lastly, “Restricted Access” works for specific days/times, like once a week when the housekeeper makes a visit. This lock may look like it’s right out of a James Bond movie, but with no hardwiring required, the SmartScan can easily be installed with a #2 screwdriver by watching the instructional video available online. And, because sometimes you’ll just need to do things the old fashioned way, a “backup” key is part of the SmartScan as well.
